River Mile 853.20 — On Both Banks
Infrastructure
This Interstate Highway bridge has 64 feet vertical clearance at pool stage. Underneath the LDB end of the bridge is a good view of the Lower St.Anthony Lock and Dam. Also, while under the bridge, note the PVC piping and tubing on the underside of the bridge deck. This is automated de-icer system. Sensors monitor the temperature of the bridge deck, and when computers predict formation of ice on the bridge deck antifreeze is sprayed on the pavement. Note also that the first set of piers past the cliff, upon which the bridge rests, has geared wheels to allow for expansion and contraction of the bridge as the air temperature changes.
